AFTER (African Food Tradition Revisited by Research) aims to revisit knowledge and African traditional know-how in transformations of food, in the light of new technologies for the benefit of consumers, producers and processors in Africa and Europe.
So this project should lead to a transfer of technologies from research to processing companies and thus to consumers. 10 Selected products representing 3 families of African food fit into a matrix of technologies and common processes between Europe and Africa which will be developed jointly in the context of AFTER.
Funded by the EU (FP7), the project AFTER (African Food Tradition Revisited by Research) involves seven African countries (Benin, Cameroon, Egypt, Madagascar, Senegal, Ghana and South Africa) and 4 European countries (France, Italy, Portugal and United Kingdom). The overall objective of the project AFTER is to improve African traditional products through new technological approaches to benefit consumers and producers in Africa and in Europe.
AFTER project is structured in 7 work packages (WP1 to WP7) that focus on scientific and technical activities and a WP0 regarding coordination by Cirad.
Currently 10 African traditional products are being finalized for development research. They represent 3 major families:
(i) products fermented cereal: Akpan, Gowe, Kenkey, Kishk Sa’eedi,.
(ii) products fermented meat and dried fish: Lanhouin, Kitosa, Kong
(iii) products based on plant extracts: Bissap, Natalie, Jaabi.
AAFEX with its European counterpart, the ACTIA in France, will participate in the dissemination and popularization of the results among professionals (meetings of restitution and of training, experience and publications). They are leaders in thecomponents (Work packages) 5, 6 and 7 : study of the market acceptance, Appropriation of the process improvement and technologies by SMEs and Exploitation and dissemination of the results of research.
The Expert QSA is Co leader of WP 06 and 07.
TheAAFEX has participated in the project AFTER Meeting held on 5, 6 and 7 June 2013 in Porto for the Portugal: the Meeting had as its theme the Presentation of the activities and results of the Phase II of 18 months: September 2011 (M13) to February 2013 b (M31) / AFTER Meeting on demonstration of reengineered products – Porto 05 to 07 June 2013:
-On the basis of criteria 08, 10 products/African traditional processes retained by the project AFTER 05 (including Bissap and Buy for Senegal) were selected in Porto to undergo demonstration to target companies that have shown their motivation.
06 Other African countries follow to arrange a Demo days (South Africa, Benin, Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Madagascar)
In Senegal a movie was made to cover the days of Demonstration organized 02 Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 September 2013 to the CFPIA of the Lycée Delafosse. It is being “mounting”.
2014 AAFEX must perform a number of actions:
- Realization of demonstration/training in Cameroon and Benin
- Meetings of dissemination (extension) of the results of the project in Abidjan, Dakar and Bobo-Dioulasso;
- Organisation of seminars of restitution in Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Madagascar, Cameroon (venue TBC)
- Organization of the final meeting of the project and a Congress in collaboration with UCAD in Dakar.
